“Wrong-Way Driver” incidents continue to happen on Chicago-area expressways, as well as throughout Illinois. When a driver is traveling in the wrong direction accidents often occur, due in part because drivers who are traveling in the right direction are not expecting a car to be driving in the wrong direction. Often, the crashes that result are “head-on collisions” which happen at highway speeds. Such high-speed “head-on collisions” of this nature subject vehicle occupants to tremendous forces. The force of the collisions often cause serious injuries to those involved, and often fatalities result.
While “wrong-way driver” crashes can happen for many reasons, most involve drivers who are impaired either by alcohol and/or impaired because of drug use. Often, such impairment is substantial.
There was a fatal “wrong-way driver” crash on I-55 in Woodridge early Saturday (July 21, 2018) morning. One driver was killed and another driver was injured.
An excerpt regarding the fatal crash, from the abc7chicago.com article (with video) of July 21, 2018 titled “1 killed, 1 injured in wrong-way crash on I-55“:
Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District officials said the crash occurred at around 1:30 a.m. near Woodward Avenue. Authorities said they got calls about a Ford Mustang heading northbound in the southbound lanes at more than 100 miles-per-hour.
Shortly after, the Mustang crashed head-on with a Jeep. The man in the Mustang died. Authorities have not released his identity.
The driver of the Jeep suffered accident injuries which were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal “wrong-way driver” crash can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the July 21, 2018 NBC Chicago article “1 Dead, 1 Injured in Wrong-Way Crash On Interstate 55.”
