Crosswalks are supposed to provide pedestrians with safe passage if the pedestrian has the right of way. However, as seen in many pedestrian accidents summarized on this site – both in Chicago as well as the suburbs and otherwise throughout Illinois – people have been hit and injured while lawfully attempting to cross in a crosswalk. Often, people who attempt to walk across the street in a crosswalk may “let their guard down” and not necessarily be alert to the possibility that a vehicle may suddenly travel toward them.
As seen in various accidents, some of the people who have been struck in crosswalks have suffered fatal accident injuries.
On Friday (October 9, 2020) there was an accident in which a woman was struck while in a St. Charles crosswalk. The woman subsequently was pronounced dead. This pedestrian accident – in which the suspected vehicle left the accident scene – is discussed in the “St. Charles Pedestrian Accident In A Crosswalk Leads To Fatality” post.
Whenever someone is injured due to the fault of another person, the injured person may be able to pursue compensation for the negligence that led to the injury. This is usually done through the filing of a personal injury lawsuit.
For those accidents which led to fatal injuries, a wrongful death lawsuit may be able to be filed.
