A fatal bicycle accident happened Wednesday (July 14, 2021) evening in West Rogers Park. This bicycle accident involved a collision between a pickup truck and bicycle ridden by a 9-year-old boy.
The July 15, 2021 Chicago Tribune article titled “Child riding bicycle struck by vehicle, killed in West Rogers Park” discusses this fatal collision.
Police and paramedics were called to the 7300 block of North Sacramento Avenue in the West Rogers Park neighborhood at 8 p.m. for a report that a child on a bicycle had been struck, police said.
A Toyota Tundra, driven by a 48-year-old man who was the lone occupant, was headed north on Sacramento, according to Kellie Bartoli, a Police Department spokeswoman. John Catanzara, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said the driver was an off-duty Chicago police officer.
The driver was cited for failure to exercise due care, police said.
The boy was struck as he rode east in a crosswalk at the intersection of North Sacramento and West Chase avenues, police said. They earlier said he was struck while on a sidewalk.
The boy was declared deceased after being taken to Amita Health St. Francis Hospital. He was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Hershel Weinberger, 9, of Chicago.
The pickup truck driver was subjected to both alcohol and drug testing.
The accident investigation is being conducted by the Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit.
As discussed throughout this site, crosswalks are supposed to provide an extra measure of safety to pedestrians and bicyclists as they seek to cross the street. However, there are many Chicago-area accidents that have involved a vehicle striking a bicyclist or pedestrian in a crosswalk.
In many cases, these accidents have led to serious injuries, and some have led to fatalities.
