Two Serious Crashes In Which Vehicles Crossed The Center Line

Among the types of crashes that typically cause serious accident injuries, as well as fatalities, is the “head-on collision.”  In most instances these crashes occur after one vehicle “crosses the center line” and collides with an oncoming vehicle.

Due to the strong physical forces involved in such a frontal collision, as well as vehicle occupants being subject to highly unnatural forces, a broad range of injuries can result.  As seen in many Chicago-area accidents involving “head-on crashes” it is common for such injuries to lead to fatalities.

Two recent crashes that involved a vehicle crossing the center line have occurred in DeKalb and in in Valparaiso, Indiana.  The Valparaiso crash caused a fatality as well as various other people being injured.

The DeKalb crash, which involved a “head-on” collision, caused serious injuries to various people.

The Chicago Sun-Times article of January 23, 2018, titled “Pregnant woman hurt in Valparaiso crash dies 6 days later” discusses the Valparaiso crash.  An excerpt:

A pregnant woman has died nearly a week after she was injured in a northwest Indiana crash that left four other people hurt.

Emergency crews responded about 2 p.m. Jan. 15 to a two-vehicle crash in the 200 block of West State Road 130 in Valparaiso, Indiana, according to the Porter County Sheriff’s Office. A westbound Dodge Dakota slid sideways into the eastbound lanes and across the median before crashing into a Chevrolet box truck.

The pregnant woman who died was identified as 28-year-old Jesse Ruth Dexter of Valparaiso.  She was a front-seat passenger in the Dodge.  Other people in the Dodge were also hurt and hospitalized, including the driver and two back-seat passengers.

The driver of the box truck was also hurt and taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The January 24, 2018 “head-on” collision that happened in DeKalb happened on Peace Road south of Pleasant Street at 4:48 p.m.  The crash is discussed in various articles, including the January 26, 2018 Daily Chronicle article titled “Mother involved in Peace Road crash in critical condition.”  An excerpt regarding the cause of the crash and the driver, Rachel Jimenez of Waterman, who was the driver of one of the cars involved:

DeKalb police Sgt. Jim Haacker said Wednesday a black Mustang was northbound on Peace in the right lane when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle. Haacker said the driver lost control of his vehicle as it moved into the left lane and skidded into southbound traffic. The vehicle collided head-on with a white Toyota, driven by Jimenez. The GoFundMe page said Jimenez is a single mother of three teenagers.

As seen in the article, Rachel Jimenez suffered various accident injuries, including various broken bones, damage to her colon, and a back fracture.  She was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in critical condition.  The article indicates a GoFundMe page has been established.

Her son, also in the car, was also apparently injured, as was the driver of the Mustang.  Both were hospitalized.

Additional details regarding these accidents in which one vehicle has crossed the center line and a collision followed can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
