Two Recent Chicago Area Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle accidents that happen in Chicago can lead to a variety of outcomes for the bicyclist.  While some lead to minor injuries – such as bruises and scrapes – many others lead to serious accident injuries.  These serious injuries include a broad range, and recovery from such injuries can range from days to years.  Some injuries may be permanent in nature.  These permanent injuries often involve some type of impairment and can lead to ongoing medical and rehabilitation costs.

While fatal Chicago bicycle accidents can occur under various circumstances, in 2016 fatal bicycle accidents did tend to exhibit common characteristics.  Those characteristics are discussed in the March 10, 2017 post (“Various Notable Aspects Of Fatal Chicago Bicycle Accidents In 2016.”)

Two recent bicycle accidents have occurred in Cook County, one in Chicago and one in Glencoe.  The Chicago bicycle accident resulted in the death of the bicyclist; the Glencoe bicycle accident involved a “hit & run” driver.

The fatal bicycle accident in Chicago occurred on October 30, 2017 in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood.  This accident is discussed in various media sources, including the November 1, 2017 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Bicyclist fatally struck by vehicle in Garfield Ridge.”  An excerpt:

About 8 a.m., Lisa Schalk was riding east on South Archer Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle that was also heading east and turning onto South Lorel Avenue, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Schalk, 50, of Chicago, was pronounced dead after being taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.  The driver of the vehicle, a 79-year-old man, was cited.  The accident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit.

The “hit & run” accident in Glencoe happened on the afternoon of October 31, 2017.  The accident scene was at Green Bay Road and Temple Avenue.  This accident is further discussed in the November 3 Glencoe News article titled “Police:  Bicyclist struck in hit-and-run accident.”

Additional details can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
