Two “Hit & Run” Accidents That Injured Pedestrians

“Hit & Run” accidents continue to be a major problem throughout the Chicago area.  On this site, accidents in which a driver leaves the accident scene are summarized in the “Hit & Run” category.  While there are many reasons that drivers may wish to flee the scene of the accident, one reason is that they may fear the repercussions of their actions if they are at fault for causing the accident.  Many times “Hit & Run” drivers are driving while intoxicated (DUI).  Other such drivers may be traveling in a stolen vehicle or otherwise be involved in criminal activity.

Recently there have been numerous notable “Hit & Run” accidents in the Chicago area.  One such accident happened in Forest Park on January 22, 2017, and involved a car striking a pedestrian, then fleeing the accident scene, on Roosevelt Road near Desplaines Avenue.  The pedestrian was reported to be seriously injured and hospitalized.  This accident is further discussed in the January 27, 2017 article titled “Man charged with Forest Park hit-and-run crash” as well as the January 23 NBC Chicago article (with video) titled “Hit-and-Run Leaves Man Seriously Injured in Forest Park.”

Another pedestrian accident in which the motorist fled the scene happened in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood on Monday night, January 23, 2017.  In this accident, a van struck two teenagers who were crossing the street in a crosswalk in the 800 block of North Lorel.  Both teenagers, ages 16 and 13, were injured and hospitalized.  Their accident injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.  An excerpt from the January 24, 2017 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “2 teens struck by van in Austin hit-and-run crash“:

The van was later found abandoned in the 5300 block of West Huron. The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.

This accident is also discussed in the January 24 CBS Chicago article titled “2 Teens Struck By Hit-And-Run Driver In Austin.”
