Drug-impaired driving has been a growing problem both locally (in the Chicago area) as well as nationally. Impaired drivers have been involved in many local accidents which have resulted in serious accident injuries as well as fatalities.
The subject of driving under the influence of drugs and its increasing frequency is further discussed on the “Car Accidents Involving Drivers Under The Influence Of Drugs” page. As discussed on that page, there are many reasons as to why drug use causes significant – if not substantial – driver impairment. Drug-impaired driving is common in fatal traffic accidents.
There are many drugs that are commonly used by drivers who drive while impaired. Among the most common drugs are marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and meth. The level of impairment varies depending on many factors, including the level of usage as well as whether two or more drugs are used (i.e. mixed drug use.) As well, if alcohol is consumed before, during, or after the drug use the level of impairment can significantly increase.
There was a November 11, 2018 Arlington Heights single-car accident in which the driver (Sam O. Kerlin, 44, of Arlington Heights) was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed. When he lost control of his car he crashed into a building and was critically injured. He was later charged with driving under the influence of drugs. An excerpt regarding the crash, from the November 16, 2018 Daily Herald article (with video) titled “Authorities release video of crash into Arlington Heights police station, charge driver“:
Police said earlier this week that the black box recovered from the vehicle registered a high speed of 104 mph.
In an interview with police at the hospital, Kerlin said he had taken cocaine and other prescription drugs before the crash, according to police Cmdr. Shawn Gyorke. Prescription drugs were found at the crash scene, he said.
Additional details concerning driving under the influence of drugs, as well as the Arlington Heights car crash, can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
