South Side Chicago Fatal Bicycle Accident

There was a fatal South Side bicycle accident Sunday (November 17, 2019) night.  Details on the accident are somewhat limited.  The cause of the crash does not appear to be publicly disclosed at this time.  The accident is under investigation.

This South Side bicycle accident is discussed in a variety of media sources, including the November 18, 2019 article titled “Bicyclist hit and killed by car on South Side.”  Two excerpts:

Lee Luellen, 40, was riding a bike west on 67th Street about 1 a.m. when he was hit by a northbound Chevrolet Impala in the intersection with Stony Island Avenue, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Luellen was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said. An autopsy ruled his death an accident, saying he died of multiple injuries related to the crash.

The 42-year-old driver of the Impala was not injured during this bicycle accident.  She was identified as Sabrinia Williams of Chicago.  An excerpt from the November 18, 2019 Chicago Tribune article titled “Woman charged with driving on a suspended license, causing fatal crash with cyclist“:

Sabrinia Williams, of the 1400 block of West 71st Place, was charged with three misdemeanors: driving on a suspended license, driving an uninsured vehicle in a crash that caused bodily harm and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

This South Side bicycle accident is under investigation by the Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit.

Bicycle accidents can happen for many reasons.  Some of these reasons are discussed on the “Chicago Bicycle Accidents” and “Chicago Bicycle Accident Injuries” pages.

While, in some instances, accidents are the fault of the bicyclist, many such accidents are the fault of motorists.  As well, there may be road hazards that may lead to a bicyclist crashing and suffering the associated injuries.

Riding in urban settings, especially during heavy traffic, can present many potential challenges to safe riding.

On this site, additional discussion of individual Chicago bicycle accidents can be seen in posts found under the “Bicycling Accidents” category.   As seen in those posts, many of these accidents lead to serious injuries, some of which lead to fatalities.
