Pedestrian accidents in crosswalks continue to occur in the Chicago area. Walking in a crosswalk is supposed to provide safe passage for pedestrians. Many Chicago pedestrian accidents – some summarized on this site under the “Pedestrian Accidents” category – have occurred while a person is legally walking in a crosswalk.
In general, there are many reasons that pedestrian accidents occur. Some involve distraction, either “distracted driving” or “distracted walking.” Other times, when a person is hit by a vehicle it has to do with the driver simply “not seeing” the walker.
There was a fatal pedestrian accident Tuesday (September 17, 2019) in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The accident led to the death of the pedestrian. Her unborn child was rescued but died four days later.
This pedestrian accident, which happened while the woman was walking across the street in a crosswalk, happened at LaSalle Drive and Grand Avenue at approximately 11:30 a.m. The flatbed truck was attempting to turn left to go south onto LaSalle from Grand at the time of the accident.
The pedestrian was pinned under the flatbed truck. She was pronounced dead after being taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She was identified by the Cook County Coroner as Elizabeth Boshardy, 29, of Chicago.
Her unborn child lived for four days after the accident before passing away.
The driver of the truck, identified as a 67-year-old man from Lyons, was issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
An excerpt concerning the accident, from the Chicago Tribune article of September 18, 2019 titled “Baby delivered after pregnant woman hit and killed crossing street in River North, police say“:
Anthony Guglielmi, the Police Department’s chief spokesman, said as of Wednesday afternoon there was no indication the driver will face criminal charges.
“At this point, it appears to be a very, very tragic accident,” he said.
This fatal Chicago pedestrian accident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this pedestrian accident that occurred in a crosswalk can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the September 22, 2019 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Baby dies four days after being delivered…”
