Pedestrian accidents often result in physical trauma to the person hit by the vehicle. A broad range of injuries can result, varying in severity.
As seen in the Chicago pedestrian accidents discussed on this site, often these pedestrian accidents result in serious accident injuries. These injuries can be life-threatening in nature, and some result in a fatality either immediately (at the accident scene) or at some later time.
Among common pedestrian accident injuries are broken bones, contusions, chest trauma, soft tissue damage, and various types of brain injuries, including concussions.
Various injuries to the legs often occur. The Elman Law Group recently settled a pedestrian accident which resulted in a knee injury. This accident and resulting lawsuit settlement is summarized in the August 22 post titled “Elman Law Group Attains $775,000 Settlement In Chicago Pedestrian Accident Lawsuit.”
Two recent Chicago area pedestrian accidents resulted in serious injuries. In one instance the injuries led to a fatality.
The first pedestrian accident occurred on the evening of October 10, 2019 in Chicago Ridge. In this pedestrian accident, which was a “hit & run,” a 48-year-old man was struck by a vehicle. This accident occurred in the 10100 block of Harlem Avenue at approximately 8:02 p.m.
According to a police report cited in the November 19, 2019 Chicago Tribune article titled “Oak Lawn village manager announces retirement days after being charged in hit-and-run crash,” the pedestrian’s injuries included multiple fractures to the body and head, and brain swelling.
The second pedestrian accident happened in Des Plaines on October 29, 2019. This accident is discussed in the October 30, 2019 Des Plaines Patch article titled “Truck Fatally Strikes Pedestrian On Touhy Avenue: Police.” In this accident, a truck fatally struck Nancy Rainey, 56, of Chicago. The accident occurred in the 200 block of East Touhy Avenue shortly after 10:30 p.m. At the time of the accident, Nancy Rainey was attempting to cross southbound Touhy Avenue. Two factors that may have increased the likelihood of an accident is that the area reportedly has poor lighting, and no crosswalks are available.
Additional discussion about pedestrian accidents can be seen in the sources mentioned above, as well as on the “Chicago Pedestrian Accidents” page.
