As bicycling continues to grow in popularity both as a recreational activity as well as a commuting method, there have been more miles traveled by bicycle. Despite various efforts to increase bicycling safety – such as installing designated bicycle lanes – this increase in bicycle travel has led to an increase in bicycle accidents. Many of these bicycle accidents involve injuries, which due to many factors are typically serious injuries. Some riders who are hurt during bicycle accidents suffer life-threatening injuries, and as seen on Chicago area bicycle accidents discussed on this site some of these accidents result in fatalities. Additional discussion of bicycle accidents – including common reasons for bicycle accidents, accident types, and injuries – are further discussed on the “Chicago Bicycle Accidents” and “Chicago Bicycle Accident Injuries” pages.
Due to roadway design, traffic patterns, and traffic control issues, as well as other factors, some roads are more dangerous for bicycle travel than are others. The Chicago Tribune article of May 7, 2018 titled “New survey finds Chicago’s most dangerous roads for cyclists” discusses the findings of a recent survey.
An excerpt from the article:
But before you hop on the saddle and take to the streets, know this: A recent survey by Rubens Kress & Mulholand found cities’ most dangerous stretches of road for bike riders (based on collisions, injuries and fatalities). Chicago’s most perilous road? Milwaukee Avenue between North Avenue and Division Street.
The article also mentions a statistic regarding national fatal cycling crashes:
The NHTSA reported that more than 1,000 bicyclists died in 2015 and nearly half a million sustained injuries. Bucktown resident Mark Casey, 41, can attest to the injuries firsthand. He shattered his collarbone when he was struck by another bicyclist while biking on Milwaukee Avenue in October 2015.
Additional details concerning various aspects of Chicago bicycle accidents can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
