There are many reasons for bicycle accidents, as well as many contributing factors. Many bicycle accidents in Chicago and otherwise throughout Illinois, as well as a discussion of bicycling safety issues and lawsuits, have been summarized in posts in the “bicycle accidents” category.
The Forbes Daily of February 25, 2015 (pdf) contains an article titled “The More Cyclists In A Country, The Fewer Fatal Crashes.” In this article, an OECD research report is discussed which has found that if a country has more cyclists, it tends to have fewer bicyclist fatalities.
The article discusses the various reasons for this, and also contains a chart showing the relationship to bicyclist travel and fatalities among various countries.
The central finding, that more cyclists means more motorist awareness – and therefore lesser bicycle accident fatalities – appears to be similar in nature to research concerning motorcyclist awareness. That research is discussed in a February 22, 2014 post on the Chicago Motorcycle Accident Lawyer Blog titled “Research As To Why Motorists Fail To See Motorcyclists.”
