There was a massive multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 94 near Michigan City in Indiana on Thursday afternoon, January 23, 2014. The accident happened at approximately 2:00 p.m.
Weather conditions, including near-blizzard snow conditions that resulted in “whiteout” conditions, contributed to the accident, which involved 46 vehicles – including 19 semi trucks. Very cold temperatures imperiled those injured in the accident.
Three people died as a result of the multi-vehicle accident, and over 20 people were injured.

Snow and whiteout conditions were contributing factors, police said. A band of heavy lake-effect snow was dropping up to 2 inches of snow per hour with visibility at a quarter-mile or less at the time of the wreck, National Weather Service meteorologist Evan Bentley said. The wreck happened near Michigan City, about 60 miles from Chicago.
During the accident, some trucks “jackknifed,” several vehicles “spun-out” and some cars were crushed between the trucks. Some cars slid underneath the trucks.
Those killed in the accident include Jerry Dalrymple, 65, of Chicago, who was pronounced dead at the scene. His black Labrador also died during the vehicle collision.

Also killed were a husband and wife from Grand Rapids, Mich. The coroner’s office identified them as Marilyn J. Wolma, 65, and Thomas D. Wolma, 67. They had been coming home from Wisconsin after caring for an ill relative, Sullivan said.
