As seen in many different accidents and accident statistics (including those found in the October 26, 2011 post titled “City Of Chicago Initiative To Highlight Pedestrian Accidents And Pedestrian Safety“) many pedestrian accidents happen while people are walking in crosswalks “with the light.” Various Chicago-area and Illinois pedestrian accidents summarized on this site discuss both non-fatal and fatal accidents in which people were hit while in a crosswalk.
On Friday (December 2, 2016) a man was hit by a vehicle as he was in a crosswalk in Des Plaines. According to Des Plaines Police, the accident happened at 5:23 p.m., as a man was crossing Thacker Street in a crosswalk. At that time, a vehicle that was turning onto Thacker struck the man.
The man, identified as Dennis Townsend, 78, of Des Plaines, was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead early the following morning.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Mary Wudtke, 73, of Des Plaines.
An excerpt from the Chicago Sun-Times article of December 5, 2016, titled “Man, 78, dies after being struck by vehicle in Des Plaines“:
Police said the investigation found Wudtke did not see the man crossing the street before she hit him. She was issued a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Additional details regarding this fatal pedestrian accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the Chicago Sun-Times article mentioned above, as well as the December 5 Daily Herald article titled “Des Plaines man, 78, dies after being struck by car in crosswalk.”
