A driver died following a crash on Friday (June 24, 2016) in Niles. The crash happened at Dempster Road at Harlem Avenue.
According to Niles Police, the accident happened at approximately 2:12 p.m. on Friday after which a man was driving at a high speed while suffering from “some type of medical distress.” The man’s SUV (a Chevrolet Tahoe) first jumped a curb in the 7200 block of Dempster Avenue, then it rear-ended a semi truck. A “chain-reaction crash” then occurred, with multiple vehicles being hit.
The driver of the SUV was identified as John Grygorcewicz, 55, of Niles.
An excerpt from the June 24, 2016 Niles-Morton Grove Patch article titled “Niles Man Dies From Injuries After 5-Vehicle Crash“:
When rescue workers from the Niles Fire Department reached the scene, they had to extricate Grygorcewicz from the driver’s seat of the Tahoe. He was then taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries at about 3:05 p.m., according to police.
The drivers of the other vehicles were not hurt, police said. The accident is still under investigation, and the major crash assistance team of the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force is helping Niles police.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this “chain-reaction” crash can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the Patch article above as well as the June 25 Niles Herald-Spectator article titled “Cops: Man suffers ‘medical distress,’ dies after causing 5-vehicle crash.”
