On Saturday (July 11, 2015) there was a fatal car accident in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood.
The accident involved a car that lost control and drove onto a sidewalk, thereby fatally striking a 13-month-old infant, Dillan Harris, who was in a stroller. The car had been fleeing a police chase.
Now, the mother of Dillan Harris, Shatrelle McComb, has filed a lawsuit in the Circuit Court of Cook County, against the City of Chicago and the police officers involved in the police chase that preceded the fatal accident. The alleged driver of the car, Antoine Watkins, 21, was also named in the lawsuit.
Two excerpts from the CBS Chicago article of July 23, 2015, titled “Lawsuit: Police Ignored Orders To Halt Chase, Caused Toddler’s Death“:
Dillan’s mother, Shatrelle McComb, has sued 20 unnamed police officers, alleging they disregarded orders to halt a pursuit of Watkins, who allegedly was fleeing a fatal shooting in the 7700 block of South Kingston Avenue. That shooting left 22-year-old Melvin Carr – a rapper known as Capo – dead of multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the lawsuit, police supervisors instructed officers to stop the chase, because of the danger to pedestrians, but they continued their pursuit for another 20 minutes.
Additional details regarding this lawsuit can be found in a variety of media sources, including the CBS Chicago article mentioned above, as well as the July 23 Chicago Tribune article (with video and slideshow) titled “Mother sues city, police officers and driver in death of 13-month-old.”
