There was a very large chain-reaction crash Monday morning (February 2, 2015) on Interstate 294 (I-294). The crash involved as many as 50 cars.
An excerpt from the CBS Chicago article of February 2, 2015, titled “Large Pileup Crash On I-294 Snarls Traffic“:
The crash happened just around 9:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes just north of 95th street, after an Illinois State Police squad car was rear-ended by another vehicle. That caused a chain reaction, involving at least three semi-tractor trailer trucks that jackknifed. Police said the chain reaction was partly the result of black ice in the area.
There were as many as 50 vehicles involved in the chain reaction crash, and at least 10 people were taken to hospitals with most or all (depending upon media source) of the accident injuries considered to be minor.
As a result of the accident, the southbound lanes were blocked for nearly two hours.
Additional details regarding this “chain-reaction” crash involving black ice can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the CBS Chicago article mentioned above, as well as the February 2 Oak Lawn Patch article titled “I-294 Backed Up for Miles After 50 Cars and Semis Crash Monday Morning” and the February 2 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “I-294 reopened after pileup involving 30 vehicles.”
