There was a fatal accident involving a semi truck and Illinois State Police (ISP) car Thursday night on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) in Northbrook, south of Willow Road. The accident led to the death of Trooper James Sauter, 28, of Vernon Hills. He was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
Trooper Sauter had pulled over onto the left shoulder of I-294. Around 11:00 p.m., he was rear-ended by a semi truck, at which point both vehicles burst into flames.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Sauter died from injuries sustained during the fire. The driver of the semi truck sustained burns to his hand.
The accident remains under investigation.
