On January 6, 2014, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) issued a news release titled “Dangerous Weather Force Road Closures Statewide; Motorists Still Urged to Stay Off Roads in Some Areas” regarding dangerous road conditions and hazardous driving conditions on Illinois roads.
The news release discusses black ice, a hazardous road condition that has led to many car accidents. An excerpt from the news release:
“With the freezing temperatures, black ice is a major concern,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. “Black ice forms on roads that appear clear and the unseen ice can be treacherous. We encourage motorists, if they must travel, to take it slow when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges and shady areas – all are prone to black ice. Motorists should use extreme caution, buckle up, avoid distractions and check www.gettingaroundillinois.com for the latest winter road conditions and road closures.”
The news release also contains a variety of “Other safety tips to remember” with regard to driving in the current extreme cold weather and snow conditions, and how to minimize the potential for car accidents.
Additional details can be seen in the above-mentioned news release.
