Icy Roads Lead To Chicago-Area Car Accidents

Over the last couple of days (January 6 & January 7, 2014) there have been many Illinois and Chicago-area car accidents. Many of these car accidents were (at least in part) due to the coldest temperatures in two decades – reaching as low as -16 degrees – and accompanying dangerous driving conditions including drifting snow and black ice on Chicago’s and other Illinois roads.

A couple of excerpts from the CBS Chicago article of January 7, 2014 titled “Deep Freeze Continues; So Do Icy Road Conditions” :

Though no fresh snow has fallen since Sunday, subzero temperatures have rendered road salt ineffective, and even some de-icing chemicals haven’t done enough to clear streets of packed snow and ice.

Illinois State Police said at least 60 crashes had been reported on Chicago area highways so far on Tuesday. Hundreds more crashes and spinouts were reported statewide on Monday, with state police assisting at least 2,500 stranded motorists.

The January 7 Chicago Tribune article titled “Black ice snarls morning commute” also contains commentary on various Chicago vehicle accidents including spinouts. An EXCERPT:

“It’s not just the Kennedy” said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Stan Nowak, whose district covers Cook County. “There have been many crashes all day long on I-55, I-290 and I-94. We’ve have numerous collisions and property damage crashes. People are driving too fast for conditions.”

Additional details and possible updates regarding these Chicago and Illinois car accidents can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the CBS Chicago and Chicago Tribune articles mentioned above.
