I-55 Fatal Collision Involving Vehicle Traveling In The Wrong Direction

“Wrong-way drivers” continue to pose a substantial threat to traffic safety.  On this site, crashes of this type that have occurred throughout Illinois are discussed in posts found under the “Wrong-Way Drivers” category.  Due to the nature of these crashes – which often involve violent collisions – accident injuries resulting from these crashes are often severe in nature.  Often, life-threatening if not fatal accident injuries result.

A November 22, 2020 fatal collision along Interstate 55 (I-55) near Wilmington allegedly involved a “wrong-way driver.”  This collision led to the death of Nicholas J. Ercolini, 33, of Blackstone, Illinois.

An excerpt regarding the driver who was allegedly driving in the wrong direction prior to the crash, from the December 4, 2020 Channahon-Minooka Patch article titled “Deadly I-55 Crash Leads To Felony Charges…“:

A Nov. 22 deadly crash involving a late night wrong-way driver traveling along Interstate 55 near Wilmington resulted in eight felony charges announced Friday by Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow.

Erik E. Christensen, a 48-year-old Wilmington resident, is being charged with six counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and two counts of aggravated driving while license revoked.

At the time of the accident Christensen was said to be driving southbound in the northbound lanes at milepost 238.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal “wrong-way driver” crash can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above.

For those that have been injured by drivers traveling in the wrong direction – or otherwise operating their vehicle in a negligent fashion – injury compensation is often pursued through the filing of  a personal injury lawsuit.  For those accidents, such as the I-55 wrong-way crash summarized above, that result in a loss of life a wrongful death lawsuit may be filed to pursue compensation.

Wrongful death lawsuits are further discussed on the “Wrongful Death Cases” page.
