I-355 Fatal Crash Involving A “Wrong-Way Driver”

Drivers who travel in the wrong direction, commonly referred to as “wrong-way drivers,” continue to be a substantial traffic safety problem both locally as well as nationally.  On this site, many of the crashes that involve “wrong-way drivers” that have occurred in the Chicago area as well as throughout Illinois are discussed in posts in the “Wrong-Way Drivers” category.  As seen in those posts, this type of crash is problematical for many reasons.  Typically these crashes lead to serious accident injuries to vehicle occupants, and fatalities often occur either immediately or a short time after the collision.

Due to the deaths and injuries that occur when vehicles collide after a driver has been traveling in the wrong direction, it is common for those that have been hurt due to the recklessness of a “wrong-way driver” to seek compensation through the filing of a lawsuit. Due to the typical extensive injuries that result during a “wrong-way driver” crash, the need for compensation can be substantial.  For those who have died in such a crash, relevant parties can file a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the decedent.

There was an I-355 fatal car crash late Thursday (March 28, 2019) night in Downers Grove. This I-355 fatal crash resulted in two people being killed and three other people being seriously injured, suffering from “life-threatening” injuries.

According to information provided by the Illinois State Police, the crash involved four vehicles. The crash involved one vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, i.e. it was a “wrong-way driver” crash. This crash involved a “head-on collision.”

An excerpt regarding this I-355 fatal car crash, from the March 29, 2019 Chicago Tribune article titled “Drivers from Hammond, Bloomingdale killed, 3 other people seriously hurt in wrong-way crash on I-355 in Downers Grove“:

The drivers of the cars that crashed head-on were killed. They were identified as Robert Velazco, 36, of Hammond, Ind., and Arshad Mohammed, 32, of Bloomingdale. A 66-year-old woman and two men, 24 and 66, were seriously injured, state police said.

Police said Velazco was driving a blue Volkswagen south in the northbound lanes when it struck a black Honda driven by Mohammed near Maple Avenue around 11 p.m., police said. The cars were then struck by a silver Subaru and a white Ford box truck.

Velazco died at the accident scene.  Mohammed died early Friday morning at the hospital.

Additional details, including the condition of those hurt in the accident, and possible updates concerning this I-355 fatal car crash can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the March 29 Lisle Patch article titled “Wrong-Way Crash On I-355 Kills 2, Injures 3 Near Downers Grove.”
