Street racing in the Chicago area has led to many accidents. Some of these accidents have led to fatalities, either to the drivers and passengers in the racing cars or to others who are not involved in the racing.
There are various reasons why street racing is dangerous. It often involves driving at high speeds, and traffic control devices are often ignored. As well, another problem involving street racing is that it usually happens on public roads that aren’t necessarily suitable for high-speed driving.
There was a fatal car accident Saturday (July 28, 2018) night on Chicago’s Far South Side which may have involved street racing. The accident involved a “head-on collision.” Two teenagers were pronounced dead following the collision, and two other people were listed in critical condition.
An excerpt regarding the fatal collision, from the July 29, 2018 abc7chicago.com article (with video) titled “2 killed, 2 injured in head-on Far South Side crash“:
Police said a 17-year-old man was driving a Subaru sedan at a high rate of speed northbound on Doty Avenue near 120th Street when it collided head on with a Chrysler 300 traveling south on Doty Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Fire officials said a high-performance car lost control in an area where cars are known to drag race.
The occupants of the Subaru, identified as Michael Clark, 17, of Portage, IN and Zachery Tomak, 16, of Portage, IN were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Both teenagers were pronounced dead there.
The driver of the Chrysler was identified as a 21-year-old man. The passenger was identified as a 19-year-old woman. Both were taken to Christ Hospital for treatment of their accident injuries, and were in critical condition.
The accident investigation is being conducted by the Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit.
