Girl Struck By Car While Walking In Arlington Heights Crosswalk

As frequently discussed on this site, there have been pedestrian accidents in Chicago and the broader Chicago area which happen as a person is walking in a crosswalk.  As seen in the pedestrian accidents that are summarized on this site, in many instances when a person is hit by a vehicle accident injuries are serious in nature, and in some cases lead to fatalities.

There was a pedestrian accident Wednesday night (November 22, 2017) in Arlington Heights in which a 9-year-old girl was struck by a car.  At the time the girl was hit she was walking in a crosswalk.

According to Arlington Heights Police, the accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Arlington Heights Road at St. James Street, which is just north of the downtown area.

An excerpt from the Daily Herald article of November 22, 2017, titled “Girl hit by car in Arlington Heights“:

The girl was with a group of other kids her age and adults at North School Park, likely checking out holiday decorations that are in place but not yet illuminated for the season, Henderson said.

The group went to a crosswalk at St. James Street to head east across Arlington Heights Road, and the girl entered the street when a southbound vehicle in the lane closest to the curb stopped.

“The vehicle in the center lane did not see that somebody was in the crosswalk, kept going and hit the child,” Henderson said.

The girl was thrown onto the hood of the car during the accident, and then fell onto the pavement.  She was taken to the hospital for treatment of her accident injuries.

Another excerpt from the article, quoting Arlington Heights Police Department Sgt. Thomas Henderson:

The crosswalk at St. James Street and Arlington Heights Road is marked, both on the pavement and with “pretty predominant signs,” Henderson said. The signs are meant to caution drivers that pedestrians might be present.

The driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this pedestrian accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the November 24 Arlington Heights Patch article titled “Car Hits Girl, 9, As She Crosses Street:  Cops.”
