Fatal “Wrong-Way Driver” Crash On The Indiana Toll Road In Gary

“Wrong-Way Driver” crashes are an ongoing traffic safety issue nationally as well as in the Chicago area.  These crashes are particularly troublesome as they often result in “head-on” collisions that cause serious accident injuries to all vehicle occupants.  In many instances these injuries result in fatalities.

On this site, many Illinois vehicle accidents causing injuries and fatalities have been summarized.  The summaries regarding drivers who are driving in the wrong direction and have caused accidents are found in the “Wrong-Way Drivers” category.

There was a notable “wrong-way” driver accident on the Indiana Toll Road early Saturday (September 1, 2018) morning in Gary, Indiana .  The crash resulted in four fatalities as well as serious injuries to three people.

According to Indiana State Police, first responders went to the accident scene at approximately 1:40 a.m.  The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near the Grant Street exit.

The crash happened as a Toyota SUV was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes without its headlights on.  It collided with a Jeep SUV that was traveling in the left lane.

Among those that were killed in this “wrong-way driver” crash were the driver of the Toyota, identified as Tiara Davis, 25, of Calumet City.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as Octavio Chavez-Renovato, 45, of Chicago, died as a result of the crash.  His wife, Eva Gonzales, 34, as well as their son, Luis, 14, also died.  All the fatalities occurred at the accident scene.

An excerpt from the September 1, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article (with accident scene photos) titled “4 killed, 3 seriously injured in wrong-way crash on Indiana Toll Road in Gary” with regard to those injured in the accident:

Three other children in the Jeep — the family’s daughters, Damaris, 11; Emily, 10; and Florali, 7 months — were seriously injured and initially taken to Methodist Hospital in Gary, according to police. Emily was later air-lifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center, while Damaris and Florali, the latter in a child safety seat, were flown to Comer Children’s Hospital.

Police believed alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Toxicology was pending.

As can be seen in the accident scene photos, damage to the vehicles appears substantial.
