Fatal “Wrong-Way Driver” Collision In Chicago’s Loop

Accidents which occur while drivers are driving in the wrong direction continue to cause serious – and in many cases – fatal injuries.  In most instances these “wrong-way driver” crashes happen when the driver is intoxicated.  On this site, such crashes are summarized in the “Wrong-Way Drivers” category.

There was a fatal accident early Monday morning (January 2, 2016) in Chicago’s Loop.  The accident involved a driver heading in the wrong direction in the 100 block of South Wells.

Details on the accident are somewhat limited.  According to Chicago Police, the accident happened at 12:05 a.m., as a 15-year-old girl (later identified as Hailee Melendez, of Chicago) was driving a Nissan Pathfinder.  The accident happened as the Pathfinder struck a steel beam that supports a CTA platform.

The crash was a “pin-in” crash.  The girl was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

This fatal Chicago accident remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit.
