There was a fatal accident Monday evening (April 9, 2018) in Chicago’s Calumet Heights neighborhood involving a SUV that crashed into a CTA bus shelter. The accident led to the death of one woman as well as five other people being injured.
According to Chicago Police, the accident happened at approximately 6:25 p.m., in the 9400 block of South Stony Island Avenue.

The crash happened when a white BMW X5 SUV headed north on Stony Island collided with a Chevy sedan making a left turn. The BMW driver lost control and crashed into the bus shelter, killing 67-year-old Janice M. Gilmore, who was on the sidewalk nearby, police said. She lived in the 9300 block of South Merrill Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A 5-year-old girl and two women, 20 and 21, at the bus stop suffered minor injuries and were taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, police said.
The driver of the Chevy refused medical attention at the accident scene. A passenger in the Chevy, identified as being 24 years old, was critically injured and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for medical treatment.
The driver of the BMW was also injured and taken to Trinity Hospital for treatment of crash injuries.
The driver of the SUV was issued various citations including failure to reduce speed and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
The accident investigation is being conducted by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.
