Pedestrian accidents continue to be a significant traffic safety concern as such accidents often led to serious accident injuries. While there are a broad range of accident injuries that can result when a person is hit by a vehicle, among common injuries are broken bones, chest trauma, and head injuries, including concussions. Further discussion of pedestrian accidents – including what should be done from a medical and legal perspective if one is hit by a vehicle – can be found on the “Chicago Pedestrian Accidents” page.
As seen in numerous Chicago area pedestrian accidents that have been summarized on this site, pedestrian accidents are often highly physically traumatic, and the injuries that occur are often life-threatening in nature.
There have been many recent Chicago-area pedestrian accidents. Some of these crashes have been “hit & run” accidents.
On Thursday (February 14, 2019) there was a fatal pedestrian accident in Elk Grove Village. In this accident, a pedestrian was standing near the curb at an intersection of Walnut and Maple Lanes when he was hit in the head by a mirror on a Chevy Suburban that was turning. An excerpt concerning the accident and the pedestrian, Gerald Frens, from the February 16, 2019 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Man struck and killed by driver’s mirror in Elk Grove Village“:
Frens was awake and talking with first responders, who took him at 4 p.m. to Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village, authorities said.
His condition worsened at the hospital and required surgery, police said. He died Friday at 8:20 p.m. Frens lived in the same block where he was struck by the vehicle, the medical examiner’s office said.
A subsequent autopsy performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that Frens, 75, died from a closed head injury.
