There was a fatal “chain-reaction” car crash Saturday afternoon (January 27, 2018) in Chicago’s South Loop. The nine-vehicle accident occurred at Wells Street and Congress Parkway and led to one man being fatally injured and eleven other people being injured and hospitalized.
According to information provided by the Illinois State Police, the crash happened at approximately 4:20 p.m.
The crash occurred when the driver of a white Mercedes suffered a medical emergency as he was exiting the eastbound Eisenhower Expressway. The speed of this vehicle appears to have intensified the severity of the subsequent “chain-reaction” crash.
An excerpt regarding the crash, from the January 29, 2018 Chicago Tribune article (with video and remembrances) titled “Man killed in South Loop pile-up had been chef at downtown restaurants,” mentioning Darious Sconiers, 35, who was declared dead after being taken to Stroger Hospital:
The driver of the Mercedes, a 56-year-old man from downstate Peru, plowed into the back of Sconiers’ gray Cadillac “at a very high rate of speed,” trapping Sconiers, state police said. The Mercedes hit at least eight other vehicles that had been stopped in traffic. Congress was shut down for nearly seven hours.
The article also discusses the accident injuries of the others hurt in the crash. Many of the injuries were serious in nature, and many of the adults injured were in critical-to-serious condition. Vehicle occupants who were injured were taken to Stroger Hospital, Northwestern Hospital, and Rush University Hospital for treatment of their accident injuries.
Other people may have been injured in the crash but they declined medical treatment.
An excerpt from the abc7chicago.com article (with video and remembrances) of January 28, 2018 titled “Driver’s medical emergency caused fatal 9-vehicle crash in South Loop“:
The driver of the Mercedes sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was being treated at Stroger Hospital. The driver’s wife, a passenger in the car, was hospitalized as well on Sunday.
