There was a fatal pedestrian accident Thursday (December 27, 2018) evening in Niles. The fatal crash was at first considered to be a “hit & run” accident in which the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian fled the accident scene. However, the subsequent accident investigation determined that the driver did not leave the accident scene.
According to police, first responders were called to the accident scene, which was at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and Betty Terrace, at approximately 6:24 p.m. It was determined that a vehicle struck a man as the man was attempting to cross the street from east to west.

“As the pedestrian entered into the Northbound curb lane of Greenwood Avenue, a vehicle described as a gray 2016 Jeep Patriot struck the pedestrian causing that pedestrian to be transported to Lutheran General Hospital for injuries sustained during the crash,” police said in a statement.
The pedestrian was declared dead after being taken to Lutheran General Hospital. He was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Michael Potwora, 72, of Niles.
