Driving while impaired continues to be a significant traffic danger. While, traditionally, this impaired driving typically involved drunk driving, increasingly the impairment is being caused by drug use. The impairment caused by this drug use can be increased if there is mixed drug use and/or the drug use is combined with drinking alcohol.
Drug use that has led to car accidents has caused many serious injuries as well as fatalities in the Chicago area. Drug-impaired driving and the dangers presented is further discussed on the “Car Accidents Involving Drivers Under The Influence Of Drugs” page.
There was a fatal accident early Friday (January 11, 2019) morning on Lower Wacker Drive. After the crash the driver of a car was charged with DUI for alleged drug use, violation of the child restraint law, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, and having no driver’s license.
The accident is discussed in a variety of media sources, including the January 12, 2019 Chicago Tribune article (with video) titled “Driver was high, had no driver’s license during fatal Lower Wacker Drive wreck, police say” as well as the January 11 Chicago Patch article titled “3-Year-Old Girl Ejected From Car, Killed In Crash On Lower Wacker.”
An excerpt regarding the crash, from the Chicago Patch article:
A Mazda 3 was traveling west on Lower Wacker Drive and made an illegal u-turn at Garvey Court at about 1 a.m., police said. The Mazda crashed into an eastbound Acura MDX.
The mazda struck a support column and the 3-year-old girl was thrown from the car. She was not in a child safety seat or wearing a seat belt, police said.
The girl was pronounced dead after being taken to Lurie’s Children Hospital.
The driver of the Mazda, a 29-year-old woman, and a 29-year-old male passenger were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment of their accident injuries. They were both in serious condition.
The four people in the SUV declined medical attention.
This alleged driving while impaired crash is under investigation by the Chicago Police Department.
