Fatal I-88 Truck Collision

There was a fatal truck accident on Interstate 88 (I-88) in Aurora on Monday night, January 27, 2014.

This truck accident happened as an IDOT equipment operator and an Illinois State Police (ISP) Trooper were assisting the driver of a semi truck that was disabled in the eastbound lanes, near Eola Road. At approximately 9:45 p.m., another semi truck collided with the disabled semi, the IDOT truck, and the Illinois State Police car.

The resulting collision created a fire that engulfed all of the vehicles.

The Illinois Tollway employee, identified as Vincent Petrella, 39, was declared dead at the accident scene.

The Illinois State Police Trooper, identifed as Douglas J. Balder, 38, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in serious condition. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Neither of the semi truck drivers were injured during this Tollway accident.

At the time of the collision, according to an excerpt from the Chicago Tribune article of January 28, 2014 titled “Tollway worker killed, trooper hurt in fiery crash” :

The state police car’s lights were flashing, and an illuminated arrow on the back of the truck was lit and directing traffic away from the semi, officials said.

This I-88 accident remains under investigation.
