“Hit & Run” accidents continue to occur in significant numbers throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. On this site, accidents in which a driver leaves the accident scene are summarized in the “Hit & Run” category. Recently there have been numerous notable “Hit & Run” accidents in the Chicago area, many of which have left motorists and pedestrians with serious injuries, and in some cases fatal injuries.
While there are many reasons that drivers may wish to leave the accident scene, one reason is that they may fear the repercussions of their actions if they are at fault for causing the accident. Many times “Hit & Run” drivers are driving after drinking or driving while “high” on drugs. Other times, the driver may be driving at high speed. Other such drivers may not want to wait for police to arrive at the accident scene as they may be traveling in a stolen vehicle or otherwise involved in criminal activity.
On February 14, 2017 there was another fatal “hit & run” crash in the Chicago area, this one in Des Plaines.
According to Des Plaines Police, the accident occurred while two men were crossing westbound South Wolf Road near Jarvis Avenue at approximately 6:15 a.m. They had just gotten off a Pace bus before attempting to cross the street. As they were attempting to cross the street, they were both struck by a white work van.
Both of the pedestrians were taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment of their accident injuries. One man was declared dead, while another received medical treatment for accident injuries considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
Additional details regarding this fatal “hit & run” accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the February 14 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Police: Man fatally struck by hit-and-run van in Des Plaines” as well as the February 14 Daily Herald article titled “Man dies in Des Plaines hit-and-run crash.”
