Fatal Hit & Run Bicycle Accident In Garfield Park

There was a fatal Chicago bicycle accident Wednesday night (August 17, 2016) in the Garfield Park neighborhood.

Details on the cause of the accident do not appear to be publicly disclosed at this time.  However, the accident is considered to be a hit & run accident involving a van striking the bicyclist.

According to Chicago Police, the fatal crash happened at 10:19 p.m., as a bicyclist was riding in the 4000 block of West Maypole Avenue.  At that time, the bicyclist was struck by a work van, which did not stop after the collision.  The van continued west on Maypole Avenue.

The bike rider was identified as Francisco Cruz, 58, of Chicago.  He was declared dead after being taken to Stroger Hospital.

The cargo van was described as being white, with a company logo on its side.  Video stills show the van.  It may have damage to its front end.
