Fatal Chicago Car Accident Involving Car That Ran A Red Light

There was a double-fatal car accident involving a car and taxi on Chicago’s Near North Side.

According to information provided by the Chicago Police, the crash happened in the 1000 block of North Clark (near Clark and Oak) and happened after one driver ran a red light.  The accident happened just after 3:00 a.m. and involved a car “rear-ending” the taxi.

An excerpt from the NBC Chicago article (with video) of November 1, 2017, titled “2 Killed in Double-Fatal Crash on Near North Side“:

There, police said a Hyundai Sonata and a taxi cab were traveling southbound on Clark when the driver of the Sonata, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at a red light and rear ended the cab in the intersection.

The driver of the taxi was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  He was identified as Mekonnen Kassa, 52, of Rogers Park.

The driver of the Sonata, identified as Sungde Joof, 40.  He was pronounced dead after being taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

The accident investigation is being conducted by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.
