There are many potential causes of vehicle accidents in the Chicago area. One potential cause is when vehicles “run a red light” and then collide with another vehicle.
The NBC Chicago article (with video) of August 5, 2015, titled “Study Shows Chicago is Fifth Deadliest City for Accidents Caused by Running Red Lights,” discusses a recent study by the National Coalition of Safer Roads (NCSR) titled “Which U.S. Cities Have the Most Red-Light Running Fatalities?”
The study indicates that Chicago was ranked No. 5 on the list, having had 99 red light fatalities over a nine-year period. The NBC Chicago article also discusses the issue and impacts of cars running red lights, and shows video footage from the Chicago Department of Transportation that shows several accidents in which cars “ran a red light” and caused a collision, many at substantial speeds.
Additional details – including an interactive map showing the Chicago areas in which crash fatalities have occurred after a car ran a red light – can be seen in the NCSR study shown above.
