On Thursday afternoon, August 2, a coach bus traveling from Chicago to Kansas City ran into a concrete pillar along Interstate 55 (I-55) near Litchfield, Illinois.
One person was killed during the accident, and at least 32 people were injured.
Although the accident remains under investigation, it is being reported that Illinois State Police believe that the bus may have blown a tire, thereby leading to a loss of control of the bus.
According to an August 3 Chicago Tribune article titled “Megabus: Bus in fatal crash made in 2011, inspected days ago” the bus company, Megabus, says the bus was manufactured last year “…and ‘had passed a full preventative maintenance check within the past week.'”
Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources including the Chicago Tribune article mentioned above, as well as the August 2 NBC Chicago story titled “1 Dead, 32 Injured in Chicago-Kansas City Megabus Crash.”
