Fatal Bicycling Accident On Will County Forest Preserve Trail

There was a fatal bicycling accident in Will County, Illinois on Saturday, August 9, 2014.

According to Will County Forest Preserve Police, the accident happened just before 11:00 a.m. on the Hickory Street Junction Trail (Will County Forest Preserve) trail. At that time, a man riding a bicycle went to pass a jogger, then swerved to avoid hitting an oncoming bicyclist. In doing so, the man fell off his bicycle and hit the back of his head on the pavement. At the time of the accident the man was not wearing a helmet.

The man was identified as Vaidas Varpucanskis, 42, of Mokena.

According to the Will County Coroner’s Office, he was pronounced dead at 11:38 a.m. at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

An excerpt from the Chicago Tribune article of August 11, 2014, titled “Mokena man dies after bike crash on Will County trail” quoting Will County Forest Preserve Police Lt. Tracy Chapman:

“We recommend everybody wears their helmets while riding bikes,” Chapman said, adding that others have died while biking on forest preserve trails without helmets.
