Fatal Bicycle Accident In Chicago’s West Englewood Neighborhood

As discussed often on this site, bicycle accidents often lead to serious, if not life-threatening injuries to those who have been hit by a vehicle while riding their bicycle.  Due to the fact that there on a bicycle is no structural impact protection like that provided by a vehicle, the force of the impact is often directly transmitted to the bicyclist.  The impact often causes a wide range of injuries, with some being fatal in nature.  Many Chicago bicycle accidents have been summarized on this site.

There was a fatal bicycle accident in Chicago’s West Englewood neighborhood on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.   Details on the accident are somewhat limited.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the March 4, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Bicyclist killed in West Englewood crash“:

About 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, Carlos D. Ocana-Castillo was riding a bike in the 1800 block of 59th Street when a vehicle changed lanes, struck him from behind and then drove off, Chicago Police said.

Chicago Police say that he was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment of his accident injuries.  According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, he was pronounced dead on Thursday (March 1, 2018) evening.

The accident investigation is being conducted by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.

Additional details concerning these subjects can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
