There was a fatal bicycle accident Wednesday evening (June 15, 2016) in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. The bicyclist was declared dead after being taken to Northwestern Hospital.
According to information provided by the Chicago Fire Department as well as the Chicago Police Department, the accident happened at Michigan Avenue and Oak Street.
An excerpt from the June 15, 2016 Chicago Tribune article (with video) titled “Bicyclist dies after being hit by tour bus in Gold Coast“:
The bus was heading west on Oak Street at 5:28 p.m. when a 29-year-old bicyclist heading north on Michigan disobeyed a red light and turned into the bus, causing the accident, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman, citing preliminary information.
However, it should be noted that witnesses appear to have given other material accounts as to the circumstances around the fatal collision.
The bicyclist was stuck under the bus, and he had to be extricated by the Chicago Fire Department. The Chicago Fire Department had to use airbags to lift the bus off of the cyclist. After the extrication effort, the bicyclist was taken to Northwestern Hospital and declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
This fatal Chicago bicycle accident is being investigated by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.
