Fatal 3-Vehicle Accident On Lake Shore Drive

There was a fatal vehicle accident on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive (LSD) early this morning. Two men died and two others were critically injured.

Details on the cause of the accident were initially limited. However, it was later determined that the accident involved a “wrong-way driver” who was driving northbound in the southbound lanes at speeds that may have exceeded 60 m.p.h.

The accident happened at approximately 4:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive between Belmont and Diversey and involved three vehicles, comprised of two SUVs and a car.

The “wrong-way driver” was the only occupant in his vehicle, and alcohol may have played a factor. His vehicle initially hit a vehicle driven by a woman, before striking a 2013 Jeep occupied by two men.

Traffic was diverted on southbound Lake Shore Drive for more than five hours following the accident.

The two men killed during the crash, who were occupants in the Jeep, have been identified as Fabian Torres, 27, of Chicago, and Joaquin Garcia, of Chicago, according to Chicago Police.

The accident remains under investigation.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources including the March 15 Chicago Tribune article titled “2 dead, 2 injured in Lake Shore Drive crash; lanes reopened” as well as the Chicago Sun-Times article of March 15 titled “Southbound Lake Shore Drive closed for 5 hours after fatal crash.”
