An excerpt regarding the crash, from the Chicago Sun-Times article of February 17, 2017 titled “Police: 4 dead, 1 critical after Des Plaines car wreck“:
A Mercedes had been speeding west on Northwest Highway when it slammed head-on into a Chevrolet Impala in oncoming traffic as the Impala turned into a parking lot, police said. The force of the collision sent the Impala back into the eastbound lanes, and it was hit by a Toyota Highlander.
While the crash reconstruction report is still being prepared, preliminary indications are that the Mercedes may have been traveling in excess of 80 to 100 mph at the time of the collision.
[note: another source, the February 17 abc7chicago.com article (with video) titled “4 killed, 1 critically injured in 3-car high speed Des Plaines crash” says “The impact sent the Impala 75-100 feet, crashing into a Toyota Highlander.”]
The three occupants of the Chevrolet Impala were taken to hospitals, where they died. They were identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kevin Crawford, 52, Anita Crawford, 50, and Kirsten M. Crawford, 20, all from Arlington Heights.
The driver of the Mercedes was identified as Piotr Rog, 21, of Des Plaines. He died after being taken to a hospital.
A passenger in the Mercedes was taken to Lutheran General Hospital (Park Ridge) for treatment of accident injuries. That passenger was in critical condition.
Two people in the Toyota Highlander were treated at the accident scene for injuries that were considered to be “minor injuries.”
