Bicycling “dooring accidents” continue to be a substantial traffic safety concern. These crashes can occur anywhere where parallel parking occurs, and as such many happen in urban areas. However, it can happen in any instance when a bicyclist attempts to pass a parked car on the left. Given that the bicyclist can be traveling at a significant speed at the time of the “dooring accident,” accident injuries can be significant and possibly life-threatening in nature. Common injuries that occur during a “dooring accident” include head injuries, neck injuries, bruises, abrasions, and shoulder injuries. However, a broad range of other injuries can occur.
These types of bicycle collisions are somewhat common in Chicago. As seen in the Chicago Tribune article of August 17, 2018, titled “New distracted driving fine, bike safety rule signed into law” regarding the number of “dooring accidents”:
lllinois Department of Transportation data shows dooring crashes on the rise across the state. In 2015, there were more than 300 reported in Chicago, a 50 percent increase from the previous year.
A method for drivers to open the vehicle’s door, called the “Dutch Reach,” is being promoted to lessen the possibility of a driver causing a “dooring accident.” This “Dutch Reach” method encourages drivers to look back into traffic before opening the door.
The method is further discussed in the Chicago Tribune article mentioned above as well as the September 26, 2018 wgntv.com article (with video) titled “Cyclists vs. doors: How the ‘Dutch reach’ could help.”
Additional details concerning bicycling “dooring” accidents and the injuries they can cause can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
