On July 11, 2014 CBS Chicago published an article (with video) titled “Bicycling Is Popular – Helmets, Not As Much” describing the safety benefits of wearing bicycling helmets. This is particularly important given increasing trends in Chicago bicycling (including increased Chicago bicycle commuting) as well as increased activity in bike-sharing programs such as Divvy.
As seen and discussed in the video, should one be in a bicycling accident, wearing a bicycling helmet can significantly reduce the odds of suffering serious head injuries.
Two excerpts in the article (and further discussed in the video):
Helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 87 percent. But not everyone wears one.
Dr. James Doherty is one of a group of trauma surgeons at Advocate Christ Medical Center calling on cyclists to wear helmets. He hopes bike-sharing programs would provide them.
“The addition of a helmet can protect your brain significantly from injury,” he says. “I understand why people make that choice, but i think it’s a bad choice. If you should do it for your child, you should do it for yourself.”
Additional details and possible updates can be seen in the CBS Chicago article mentioned above.
