As discussed on both the “Chicago Bicycling Accidents” page as well as the “Chicago Bicycle Accident Injuries” page, there are many types of bicycle accidents that can occur. Many such accidents lead to serious accident injuries, and some lead to fatal injuries. Among the most serious accident injuries that can result from bicycle accidents is head injuries.
One type of bicycle accident is a “dooring” accident. For those unaware, such accidents happen when a driver opens the car door and a bicyclist who is approaching the car from the rear rides into the opened door. While these accidents typically happen in urban settings (because of the substantial amount of parallel parking) they can also happen in suburban settings where cars or vehicles are parked on the street, and the bicyclist has to “ride around” the parked vehicle.
Accident injuries due to “dooring” are usually significant – if not serious in nature – as the bicyclist is colliding with a door that is (largely) a fixed object.
There was a “dooring” accident in Arlington Heights on Tuesday (September 4, 2018) morning. The bicyclist was initially critically injured, and he later died from his accident injuries.
An excerpt regarding this fatal “dooring” accident, from the September 5, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Bicyclist critically injured in crash with open car door in Arlington Heights“:
The owner of a 2015 Kia Optima was standing in the open door of the parked car and retrieving items from inside when the 63-year-old bicyclist crashed into the owner and the door as he rode south on Dunton Avenue from Thomas Street, police said.
During the collision, the bicyclist, later identified as Glenn Richmond, hit his head on the pavement. He was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Among his injuries were critical head injuries. He died from his injuries on September 5, 2018.
At the time of the collision he was not wearing a bicycle helmet.
The accident investigation is being conducted by the Arlington Heights Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this fatal Arlington Heights “dooring” accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above as well as the September 6 Daily Herald article titled “Arlington Heights man dies from injuries in bike crash.”
