Bicycling accidents have been often discussed on this site, as they often lead to a range of serious if not life-threatening accident injuries. There are many reasons as to why bicycling accidents typically result in serious injuries. One of these reasons is that the person riding the bicycle often bears the majority of the impact force. This force can cause very strong and unnatural forces to be transferred to the bicyclist during the collision.
There was a bicycle accident Thursday night (April 26, 2018) in Riverside in which a 16-year-old boy was hit by a car as he was riding his bicycle across an intersection.
An excerpt regarding the collision, from the La Grange Patch article (with video) of April 27, 2018 titled “Teen Bicyclist Hit By Car In Riverside: Cops“:
A 16-year-old bicyclist was hit by a car while crossing First Avenue near Riverside Brookfield High School on Thursday night. Police responded at 8:13 p.m. Thursday after several calls of a bicyclist hit by a car at First and Forest.
Police said the officer arrived on scene and saw the bicyclist lying on his back in the street, and his bike off to the side of the road. The teenager was conscious and able to communicate with the officer when he asked questions.
The boy was taken to Loyola Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.
Another excerpt regarding the collision:
Through investigation it was learned the teenager had been riding his bike eastbound on Ridgewood Avenue and was crossing the intersection against the solid red light. The driver, police said, was driving northbound on First and had a green light for car traffic.
As seen in videos of the accident (seen both in the La Grange Patch article as well as the April 28 fox32chicago.com article titled “Teen survives bicycle-car crash caught on dashcam” the force of the collision between the car and bicycle was substantial, as the car did not appear to slow before the collision.
Additional details concerning this bicycle accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including those mentioned above.
