When a vehicle runs a red light, there is the potential for a serious accident occurring due to this act of negligence or recklessness. In Chicago, there have been many crashes that have occurred when a driver fails to stop at a red light. One such accident occurred early Friday (April 5, 2019) morning in Roscoe Village. In this crash, a car allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a Chicago Police SUV. The crash is discussed in the CBS Chicago article (with video) titled “Drunk Driver Smashes Into Chicago Police Cruiser In Roscoe Village.” In this crash, three people (including two police officers) were injured and hospitalized. As can be seen in the accident video, the collision, in which the car strikes (“T-bones”) the side of the SUV, is very forceful and partially lifts the SUV off of the ground.
In another accident, on Friday, January 25, a crash in the Loop involved a Jeep that allegedly ran a red light and the Jeep collided with a sedan. As seen in the January 25 WBBM Newsradio article titled “8 Injured In Loop Crash After Driver Runs Red Light: Police,” the 8 people injured during the crash were in various conditions as they were hospitalized.
While there are various reasons why a driver may fail to stop at a red light, common reasons include driver impairment (either impaired by alcohol and/or drug use) as well as distracted driving.
Drunk driving remains a serious traffic safety problem that continues to cause serious accident injuries as well as fatalities.
While, historically, drunk driving was the primary cause of driver impairment, statistics show that increasingly driver impairment is being caused by drug use. The impairment caused by this drug use can be increased due to many factors, including if there is mixed drug use and/or drinking alcohol occurs during or near the time of the drug use.
