Accidents that occur in adverse weather can occur for many reasons. Often, drivers are driving too fast for conditions, i.e. the drivers are negligent in the operation of the vehicle. However, other reasons can cause or contribute to an adverse weather crash, such as the existence of black ice, which can be very difficult if not impossible to see. As well, other icy conditions can occur if the roadway has not been sufficiently cleared of snow or the roadway has not been sufficiently salted.
While such adverse weather crashes can occur on any roadway, often they occur on expressways when the driver is traveling at higher speed.
Early Wednesday (April 15, 2020) morning there were many Chicago-area crashes that occurred on area roadways. These crashes occurred after late-season snowfall occurred, with generally a half inch to three inches of snow falling in the Chicago metropolitan area.
The most notable accident occurred on the Kennedy Expressway near North Avenue. This crash is discussed in the April 15, 2020 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Expressway crashes: Massive pileup on Kennedy sends a dozen to hospitals…” As seen in the article, the crash involved 50 vehicles, and occurred about 4:40 a.m. in the inbound lanes. Fourteen people were taken to hospitals for treatment of accident injuries. Those accident injuries were considered to be “non-life-threatening” in nature. Black ice is mentioned as a cause of the crash.
The article also mentions 85 other Cook County crashes that occurred in Cook County, as reported by the Illinois State Police. Eighteen of these crashes led to injuries, with the injuries being non-fatal in nature.
Additional details and possible updates can be seen in the article mentioned above, as well as other sources.
