A “dangerous intersection” is a term commonly used to describe an intersection that has many accidents. There can be many factors that can contribute to an intersection having many accidents. One such factor is if the intersection experiences a high volume of traffic, especially if there is insufficient traffic control devices given the traffic experienced at the intersection.
On this site there are numerous posts discussing the concept of “dangerous intersections” as well as various intersections in Chicago that some consider to be “dangerous intersections.”
In the August 9, 2018 post (“Bicyclist Fatally Hit By Dump Truck In West Loop“) a fatal bicycle accident that occurred at the intersection of Halsted and Madison was summarized. That August 9 fatal bicycle accident, at a busy intersection near a construction site, has prompted questions as to whether the intersection has characteristics that make it potentially dangerous for various roadway users.
In the August 16, 2018 CBS Chicago segment (video and article) titled “Intersection Of Halsted And Madison Cited In 28 Accident Reports” discusses the intersection of Halsted and Madison with regard to the number of accidents that have occurred, and the trends of these accidents, especially given the August 9 fatal bicycle accident.
An excerpt from the article:
Developers began construction in the area in 2017, with the Chicago Department of Transportation approving the required traffic control plan and responsible for inspections.
But city records document 28 vehicle accidents within 100 feet of the site from over the last 12 months. The number is more than double the amount recorded in the three previous months.
According to IDOT just 10 accidents occurred there in 2014, 12 in 2015, and 10 in 2016.
