Two people died and four other people were injured during a 6-vehicle accident on Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway Thursday night.
The accident happened at roughly 11:15 p.m. on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 47th Street in the outbound local lanes, according to the Illinois State Police. The accident involved two semi trucks, a bus carrying nine passengers, two cars, and a minivan.
There appears to be some conflicting accounts among various media sources of how the accident occurred. All seem to indicate the accident was a “chain-reaction” accident.
Here is what is reported in the Chicago Tribune article of February 24, titled “2 dead in chain-reaction crash on Dan Ryan” :
…the semi jack-knifed in the local southbound lanes of the Ryan at 47th Street, state police said. A tour bus hit the trailer of the truck, then another semi, the two cars and the van skidded into the wreckage, authorities said.
A witness told police the jack-knifed semi but was able to straighten out and drove on after the accident. State police said he may have noticed the bus striking the trailer, and they were searching for him this morning.
The driver of the van skidded sideways and hit the back of the second semi, police said. Officials were seeking alcohol-related charges against the driver, state police said.
Two passengers in the minivan died following the accident. Four other people were injured, but their accidents were not considered to be life-threatening in nature.
